If you run a business, you must have clear health and safety rules in place and ensure that workers follow them.

This was the message delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which said that following sensible working practices – for example by referring to an HSE manual – reduces the risk of employees getting injured.

The HSE made its comments in the wake of an incident in which a worker died after being crushed by a telescopic forklift truck.

Inspector at the executive Warren Pennington said: “This incident emphasises how important it is that companies should not only ensure they have the proper procedures in place – but also ensure they are followed.”

He added that the HSE is calling on employers to take their responsibilities seriously so that “tragedies can be avoided”.

If you are keen to find out more about your responsibilities concerning health and safety, you can visit the website of the HSE, which contains information on issues such as how to conduct a risk assessment and write a performance report.
