About this privacy notice
In May 2018, new law comes into force that strengthens the rights of individuals to know what data about them is collected, used and managed. This template helps you set out your privacy policy so that you can show that you comply with every aspect of the General Data Protection Regulation (or GDPR).
It is a version of our standard privacy policy, edited to suit the business models of solicitors, will writers and other legal services providers.
The majority of personal information that you process is likely to be done on the basis that there is a contract between you and the data subject, or that the data subject has asked you to do something with the intention of forming a contract.
While you may also process data on the grounds of consent and legitimate Interests, this data is likely to relate to people who are browsing your website or enquiring about your services, and therefore be reduced in scope and quantity to many other types of business.
We have adapted our standard template accordingly, and while you will need to enter information about your business, we have greatly reduced the number of choices that you need to make about which paragraphs to leave in or remove. There is also reference where needed as to the services you offer.
Free to use
We provide this template completely free of charge.
We don't ask you to acknowledge our copyright in it or mention us in any way within it.
Features and contents
The template is written in plain English that is client friendly and structured so that it is both easy to read and easy to edit.
The first part of the notice explains the personal information types you might collect, the legal bases you have chosen for processing different types of information and how these types are used.
The second part deals with specific uses – less designed to comply with the GDPR and more for the purposes of reassuring customers.
The third part sets out requirements under GDPR once again: whether data is shared with other organisations; how it can be reviewed; and other miscellaneous matters.
The contents of the document cover:
- Categories of information collected and used, organised by the legal basis for use
- Specific examples of how data is used
- Cookies and other tracking
- Advertising, including use of remarketing
- Data transfers and processing outside the EU (if applicable)
- Management of personal information
- Data retention
